Bus-Tech, Inc. Announces Significant Performance Improvements to its Mainframe Virtual Tape Library Product Offerings

Increased Performance and Speed will Enable Optimum Back up and Disaster Recovery while Reducing Overall Cost

Burlington, MA - July 17, 2007 - Today, Bus-Tech®, Inc., a leading supplier of data center connectivity products announced the release of version 5.0 for both the Mainframe Data Library (MDL) and the Mainframe Appliance for Storage (MAS); the revolutionary tape-on-disk controllers for IBM and compatible mainframes. Achieving a 50% improvement in overall throughput, these products provide enterprise data centers with lower tape processing costs, improved end-user service levels, innovative disaster recovery alternatives, and the ability to include compliant storage in their mainframe environment.

The MDL and the MAS are tape-on-disk controllers that attach directly to the mainframe via FICON or ESCON input/output channels and use standard Gigabit Ethernet to attach to open systems storage. A fully populated MDL (with 8 FICON Ports) boasts over 600 MB/sec. throughput. Multiple MDLs can be coupled to meet even greater performance requirements; enough to meet the most demanding mainframe tape processing needs.

The MDL provides multiple independently operating Connect Nodes to insure the highest availability possible. Each Connect Node provides a minimum of 2 FICON or ESCON channel interfaces and a fully populated MDL emulates up to 1,024 mainframe tape drives. The MAS provides up to two FICON or three ESCON channel interfaces and emulates up to 256 tape transports. Both products include SNMP enhancements to monitor and report on all hardware components as well as in-line data encryption and IDRC compression functionality.

Capitalizing on the data mirroring capabilities of the EMC® Celerra® family of IP storage systems and EMC Centera™ content addressed storage (CAS) systems, the MDL and MAS also offers innovative alternatives for implementing backup and Disaster Recovery strategies in both of these environments. Both eliminate the need for tape duplexing and offsite shipping by using IP-based data replication over private or public wide area networks. And, when compared to current peer-to-peer tape data replication solutions, the MDL and MAS can eliminate requirements for specialized channel extension equipment and provide concurrent data replication to multiple sites.

"Improving upon the storage and disaster recovery features of the MDL and MAS in version 5.0 will enable our customers to realize a significant gain in performance while continuing to lower costs in the datacenter," said Bus-Tech President Al Brandt. "With companies having to adhere to a myriad of compliance and regulatory mandates, implementing an innovative and cost-effective disaster recovery solution is becoming a critical component of any business."

The MDL and MAS support connecting EMC Centera CAS systems to mainframe systems using the MDL or MAS allows data centers to immediately implement regulatory compliant storage within their mainframe tape infrastructure without the need for costly application re-engineering while realizing vastly improved data retrieval response times.

The MDL and MAS 5.0 are available immediately from EMC through EMC Select or directly from Bus-Tech, Inc.
