The Mainframe VTLs for EMC Centera presents themselves to the mainframe operating system as standard IBM 3480/3490/3590 tape drives. They provide support for IBM System/390 compatible and Unisys 2200 mainframes They utilize a technology known as tape-on-disk to store and retrieve fixed content tape-based data to/from the Centera platform.
EMC's Centera content addressable storage repository simplifies management, ensures content authenticity and delivers petabyte-level scalability. The Mainframe VTLs automate and intelligently manages the archiving of data from an IBM (or compatible) mainframe to a Centera system. With this powerful integrated solution, Centera provides a central storage archive that is safe and secure, so you can utilize those fixed content assets from anywhere at anytime, whether it's for product development, customer transactions or meeting government regulations.
Because the Mainframe VTLs emulate standard IBM tape drives, those applications using tape as their storage medium can be upgraded to the Centera with minimal disruption to their current operating environment. In addition the Mainframe VTL-Centera solutions can reduce floor space required for drives and cartridge storage, reduce personnel costs associated with managing a large tape library and reduce or eliminate the overall number of tape cartridges needed in support of those applications.
