Bus-Tech Mainframe Appliance for Storage (MAS) MAS Release mas-5.01-15 May 29, 2008 This document lists the most recent information known as of the release level and date printed above; for the most current information about the MAS, check the Bus-Tech Support web site at www.bustech.com. This Release Notes document is cumulative and describes all the changes in all MAS mas-5.01-xx releases to date, since MAS release 5.00-33 (the last 5.00 release). For changes leading up to 5.00-33 see the 5.00-33 release notes. Note: This release is distributed as an upgrade to be installed on a MAS already running either MAS release 4.04-37 or above, or any existing 5.xx release. If you are running a MAS 4.04 release prior to 4.04-37, you must first update to 4.04-37. To apply the update, follow the instructions in the update directory on the MAS Utilities CD. --------------------------------------------------------------------------- The following changes were made between MAS 5.01-14 and MAS 5.01-15: 1. Component version numbers in this release: a. MAS application mas-5.01-15 (build 247) b. Channel adapter firmware 4241 c. Channel drivers 4.3.4 on all platforms d. SCSI tape (st) driver 1.30 on all platforms e. MASZOS.XMI release 4.2 f. AWS utilities version 5.10 2. Problems fixed in this release: The following fixes apply only to a MAS using Centera storage: a. Cached data loss could occur if the same Centera cluster and database combination is configured by multiple paths definitions and used simultaneously on the same MAS. For example, if PATH=CENTERA1 and PATH=CENTERA2 specify the same Centera and database, then both are assigned to various virtual drives at the same time. Data loss would only occur if a catastrophic failure of the MAS or Centera occurred and Centera recovery was invoked. b. FSF and FSB were reading the AWSMAP trailer block as if it was user data. 3. Other changes in this release: a. The awsdir program now displays both active and scratch tapes when a VOLSER filter is specified. Previously, with a VOLSER filter only active or scratch tapes were displayed, but not both. b. The awsprint program now accepts a new, optional -a command line parameter. If -a is specified, both active and scratch tapes are displayed when a VOLSER filter is specified. Without the -a option, awsprint works as before: either active or scratch tapes are displayed, but not both, depending on whether the VOLSER filter specifies a leading '~' character. --------------------------------------------------------------------------- The following changes were made between MAS 5.01-11 and MAS 5.01-14: 1. Component version numbers in this release: a. MAS application mas-5.01-14 (build 79) b. Channel adapter firmware 4241 c. Channel drivers 4.3.4 on all platforms d. SCSI tape (st) driver 1.30 on all platforms e. MASZOS.XMI release 4.2 f. AWS utilities version 5.8 2. Problems fixed in this release: The following fixes apply only to a MAS using Centera storage: a. Performance was significantly degraded when numerous tapemarks were interspersed within the data. The following fixes apply only to SCSI-attached tape: b. The VOLSER displayed by various MAS messages may be incorrect for volumes mounted on a SCSI-attached 3590 tape drive. c. A backwards operation from end of tape might result in an I/O error. d. A newly-attached SCSI tape drive might not have the proper permissions set for MAS application access. The following fixes apply only to a MAS attached to a VSE system: e. A scratch mount request initiated for a specific drive by the VSE BTIMOUNT or BTITAPE programs would fail due to volume "SCRTCH" not found. f. When a 3590 control drive was used, proper status was not returned to the VSE BTIMOUNT and BTITAPE programs. The following fixes apply to all MAS systems: g. Problems fixed in channel adapter firmware version 4241: - Fixes potential CRC errors in data-chained data. - Improved recovery from channel link busy and abort sequences. - Control unit end status is no longer returned along with device end with unit check or unit exception status. Control unit end was causing a problem with some FICON channel extenders. h. The QUERY command was displaying mounts in progress as "Waiting -" instead of "Mount in Progress". i. MDL connect nodes were prompting for password changes at every reboot. j. QUERY SPACE was displaying incorrect total percentages when the same filesystem was mounted on multiple tape library directories. k. QUERY SPACE was not displaying the K/M/G/T character after 4-digit numbers (such as 1015G). l. Rewriting of a VOL1 label with a different VOLSER prefix was being rejected when the tape resided in the base tape library directory. This should only be rejected as illegal when for tapes that reside in a tape library subdirectory. m. Message MAS449I ("Label request changed") was displayed at every mount retry instead of only on the first mount attempt. n. Any non-redirected echo command executed inside a userscript executed by the RUN(WAIT) command causes premature termination of the script. o. In the MAS GUI configuration program, if one or more devices is deleted, the subsequent screen will display the deleted devices' names for the devices that come to occupy the same line(s) on the screen. p. z/OS utilities (MASZOS.XMI) version 4.2 includes MASSCR updated to version 4.05, with these changes: - Accommodate TLMS report header that changed from "CA-DYNAM/TLMS" to "CA TLMS" in TLMS PTF QO93291. - Changed TSM processing to use RECFM=VB for the input report, as well as sorting the input and only using the most recent status change for any volser. SORTIN, SORTOUT & SYSOUT dd cards must be added to accommodate this change. - Check for required RECFM=FBA for all other input reports. - Generalize finding location of date field for RMM EDGRPT01 report since it moves around in various releases. - Corrected handling of an RMM report Julian date. 3. Other changes in this release: a. QUERY SPACE now displays all numbers with one decimal place to minimize the affects of rounding. b. Scratch tape mount performance is significantly improved in directories that share a filesystem which is also mounted on other tape library subdirectories at the same time. c. Pending and retrying mounts are now displayed by the QUERY MOUNT (or "M") command. --------------------------------------------------------------------------- The following changes were made between MAS 5.01-10 and MAS 5.01-11: 1. Component version numbers in this release: a. MAS application mas-5.01-11 (build 8416) b. Channel adapter firmware 4239 c. Channel drivers 4.3.4 on all platforms d. SCSI tape (st) driver 1.30 on all platforms e. MASZOS.XMI release 4.1 f. AWS utilities version 5.8 2. Problems fixed in this release: a. Restored NORUN feature of import/export commands b. Clip-format checking configuration is allowed for read and write paths in Centera configurations. c. A Centera-only issue where duplicate awsmaps were being appended to the tape was fixed. d. Disk space warning and recovery functions were not being performed on the base tape library directory. e. Message MAS335I ("Path unassigned while tape mounted") is now displayed only in debug mode. This message was being displayed very frequently when the host used autoswitching and the RETAIN option. f. A resetting event unit check was being presented for every eligible CCW until the host performed a sense command. Now the resetting event state is reset once the resetting event unit check status has been presented, regardless of whether the host performs a subsequent sense. g. SNMP agent startup was failing under certain circumstances. 3. Other changes in this release: a. 3592 SCSI tape support was added. b. MASSCR has been updated to version 4.02, containing these changes: - The MASCTRL file was changed from open 'extend' to open 'input'. This eliminates 813 abends under some circumstances. The OPENMOD PARM can be used to open 'extend' if necessary. - Invalid sense information was being displayed if an I/O error occurred on MASCTRL. - The new parameter FREEAFTERSCR will free disk space (ERASE) after a successful scratch. - The new parameter FREEIFSCR will free disk space (ERASE) only if the scratch request returned a RC= - Added support for TMS DSN17 field in report. This will allow scratching of multi-file, multi-volume tapes. --------------------------------------------------------------------------- The following changes were made between MAS 5.01-06 and MAS 5.01-07: 1. Component version numbers in this release: a. MAS application mas-5.01-07 (build 7368) b. Channel adapter firmware 4239 c. Channel drivers 4.3.4 on all platforms d. SCSI tape (st) driver 1.29 on all platforms e. MASZOS.XMI release 4.0 f. AWS utilities version 5.8 2. Problems fixed in this release: a. An error occurred when retrying a mount for a volume not found in the base tapelib b. An error occurred for Centera tapes only when newly-created volumes were returned to the scratch pool. c. Database queries were not discriminating on volser prefix, resulting in excessive scratch mount times. --------------------------------------------------------------------------- The following changes were made between MAS 5.00-33 and MAS 5.01-06: 1. Component version numbers in this release: a. MAS application 5.01-06 (build 6760) b. Channel adapter firmware 4239 c. Channel drivers 4.3.4 d. SCSI tape (st) driver 1.29 on all platforms e. MASZOS.XMI release 4.0 f. AWS utilites version 5.7 2. Problems fixed in this release: a. A rewind or rewind-unload command issued to a SCSI-attached tape drive that was positioned at physical end of tape (PEOT) might be rejected with an I/O error without repositioning the tape. b. Fixes SNMP msg objects so that the message corresponds to a specific rather than generic MIB level c. Equipment Check sense on MAS314E and MAS319E was not being set. d. Manual Not-Ready state was being set when inChain, which caused z/OS to get confused and restart the chain from the beginning if a mid-chain Read gets intervention required. e. Tape devices were not shutdown cleanly and reboot of application was required between import/export activities. f. In some cases, failed Centera mounts were only being recovered after application restart. g. Disk-full errors are handled more gracefully. h. Busy Deferred Retry wasn't being honored for ESCON. i. Tape library subdirectory were being created incorrectly on filesystems with a very large amount of free space. j. EXIT! and RESTART! commands are no longer permitted from the host. k. VSE 'm' mount was not ignoring quiesced device. l. UNASSIGN wasn't removing the implicit grouping set by an ASSIGN with no PGID performed on a path with no PGID set. m. The system kernel is updated to fix the NFS client not returning out-of-space condition. n. Scratching of SnapLocked volumes was truncating final erased file by 12-18 bytes, leaving it unusable. o. Centera/HCAP devices would cause a slow memory leak that would cause problems if the application was not restarted for several months. p. Removing a path could cause a segmentation fault in the MAS application. q. Centera tapes with an empty trailing tag in the Centera clip could cause a segmentation fault in the MAS application. r. Q LABEL was not displaying HDR1/HDR2 on SCSI tapes. s. A segmentation fault in the MAS application was occurring at exit if a channel adapter was restarted unsuccessfully. t. Message MAS203I was repeating when mount directory didn't exist. 3. Other changes in this release: a. SCSI-attached IBM 3590 tape drives are now supported in addition to 3490 drives. b. Q SPACE is now supported for Centera tape libraries. Q SPACE now outputs number of scratch tapes. c. When a scratch tape is mounted and then unmounted without being accessed by the host, it is now returned to scratch status when it is unmounted. Previously, a scratch tape was unconditionally removed from scratch status when it was mounted even if it was never accessed by the host. d. When a mount fails for any of the following reasons, the mount request now remains pending and the mount is retried until successful or until the host sends a new load display message that cancels the outstanding mount request: - Non-existing VOLSER - Scratch volume not available - Volume in use elsewhere = Drive is quiesced - Centera/HCAP database connection lost e. The "Create Tape Library Mount Points" program (from the MAS desktop right-click menu) has been significantly revamped, primarily to support multiple tape libraries. Refer to the MAS User's Guide for more information. f. There are some new configuration options: BUSYRETRY=DEFERRED AllowMountOnMountedDrive MountDelaySecs FULLERASE ScratchSearchMethod=OLD has been removed. See the manual for details. g. System installation and upgrades are reported in the GUI. h. The front-panel power button now performs a soft powerdown. i. There are some new awsutils features: - new program awsextract - awshex now has a --nodecompress switch to see compressed data - awsdir allows display of last entry when more than one page of data available - awshex has --start and --end parameters --- end of whatsnew.txt file -----------------------------------------------
