Configuring the Mainframe Appliance using the Serial Port

The Mainframe Appliance for Networking (MAN) can be configured using the Serial RS-232 Port in cases where a LAN connection using NetMeeting can not be accomplished.  The following procedure details the steps necessary to accomplish this:

Required Equipment

*We have tested with the following Radio Shack cable part numbers:

  1. P/N 26-152B - Female DB9 to Female DB9 RS232C Cable.  (approx $10.00)
  2. P/N 26-264B - Null Modem Adapter - Female DB9 to Male DB9. (approx $6.00)

Connecting the MAN to the Client PC

  1. Power off the Client PC and the Mainframe Appliance.
  2. Connect the null modem cable to the DB9 connector on the rear of the Mainframe Appliance.
  3. Connect the other end of the null modem cable to the COM1 (or COM2) port on you client PC.
  4. Power on both devices and wait for them to boot up.

Configuring HyperTerminal on the Client PC

  1. Start HyperTerminal by choosing "Start", "Programs", "Accessories", "Communications", "HyperTerminal".
  2. Type in "Mainframe Appliance" on the "New Connection" Window and click "OK"

    3.    Select "COM1" (or COM2) on the "Connect To" Window and click "OK".

    4. Select Bits per second=19200, Data Bits=8, Parity=None, Stop Bits=1 and Flow Control=Hardware and clock "OK".

     5. You will then be brought to the HyperTerminal Window as shown below.

    6. Press "Enter" on the Client PC keyboard and you should be prompted to login to the Mainframe Appliance.

    7. Type in User Name of: "Administrator",  Domain: (leave blank) and Password: "bti" (lower case). You will then be at a DOS command prompt. (Note: The factory default password is "bti". Check with your system administrator to see if this has changed.)

      8. Type "cfgman" <Enter> at the DOS prompt. The MAN Configuration program will be invoked.

     9. Enter your desired program option from the Configuration Utility menu.

    10. If you choose menu item "5" (Reset TCP/IP Properties to Factory Defaults), the TCP/IP Address will be set to 192.168.1.1. The Subnet Mask will be set to: 255.255.255.0 and the Gateway Address will be set to 0.0.0.0.

    11. When finished, type "0" to exit the Configuration Utility and disconnect from HyperTerminal.

    12. Make sure that you REBOOT the Mainframe Appliance to affect any changes that you made.
