IEA437I Error Message When Varying MTL Devices

Symptom

When attempting to vary on a MAS device defined as an MTL device, the following error message is displayed by OS/390 or z/OS and the device will not vary on:

IEE103I UNIT XXXX NOT BROUGHT ONLINE
IEE763I NAME= IECTDSR2 CODE=000000800000000
IEA437I MTL DEVICE XXXX (XXXXX-XX) IS ATTACHED TO A
CONTROL UNIT THAT IS DIFFERENT THAN THAT FOR OTHER
DEVICES ALREADY IN THE POOL.

Resolution 1

This problem will occur if the MAS's channel adapter serial number changes after MVS has varied on the device at least once. The MAS's serial number would change if the MAS and/or channel adapter is replaced. Note that this is not an issue with the MAS, per se, but applies to any MTL device attached to MVS.

The issue is that MVS records the MTL's serial number the first time it varies on the MTL devices, and it will never allow the devices to come on line for the duration of that MVS's IPL if the serial number ever changes. Varying off/on the devices, paths, or CHPs does not resolve this; only a re-IPL of MVS will resolve the issue.

IBM has acknowledged that this is erroneous behavior by MVS, in APAR number OA06698.

Resolution 2

This same sequence of error messages can occur if attempting to vary on more than one MTL device. The first MTL device will vary online but all subsequent devices will fail with the error messages described at the top of this page. Note that this is not an issue with the MAS, per se, but applies to any MTL device attached to MVS.

IBM has acknowledged that this is erroneous behavior by MVS, in APAR number OA03749.

NOTE

When using MAS devices in an MTL environment, be aware there are additional APARs that should be applied. Please see the information on this page:
